Continuous Glucose Monitor
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a medical device that a diabetes patient wears to track their blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels over time. Rather than manually checking blood glucose levels with a finger prick several times a day, continuous glucose monitors measure blood glucose levels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We find our patients generally enjoy having a CGM because the body can be unpredictable – we don’t eat the same things each day and our bodies don’t react to the same foods the same way each time.
A CGM works using a small sensor which is placed just under the skin, typically on the arm or belly. Patients can easily place their CGMs by themselves using a simple application device. The sensor detects glucose levels in the fluid underneath the skin and reports that data via a reader or a phone application. Most CGM devices read levels every 5 minutes and patients must change their sensors every 7-14 days. Adriel Perez will be more than happy to show you how to use your CGM and track your glucose levels during your private appointment with us.
Insulin Pumps
An insulin pump is a small medical device that offers patients an alternative to manually injecting themselves with insulin when needed. An insulin pump works using a small needle and catheter called an infusion set. The infusion set is placed into a fatty part of the skin, through which it diffuses insulin to the rest of the body. An insulin pump can either deliver a steady amount of insulin throughout the day, or deliver a large amount of insulin at mealtimes, similar to the way the body would produce insulin naturally.
An insulin pump can be synced with a continuous glucose monitor to ensure blood glucose levels stay in a healthy range. It’s important to note that using a CGM and insulin pump together does not mean you don’t have to monitor your blood glucose levels. Rather, they aid in ensuring your blood glucose levels are in a healthy range when you do check them several times a day. Adriel Perez and his compassionate team of experts will be happy to show you how to use your insulin pump, with or without a CGM, during your private appointment.
